When we stop stretching or are experiencing muscle fatigue, it is common to experience an involuntary contraction of the muscles that causes a lot of pain: the cramp. Although they are harmless, cramps cause a great deal of discomfort and a lot of sudden pain. They are common in older people, but anyone who is susceptible to their causes can experience this.
They are caused by a lack of calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium or by excessive physical effort, cold, dehydration and sudden changes in temperature, in addition to the causes mentioned above. One of the regions where the cramp happens more frequently is the calf and when this happens, try to stretch by pulling the toes inwards.
In addition, they can also be caused by low blood sugar, peripheral arterial diseases, diarrhea, hypothyroidism, sarcoidosis and kidney failure. The consumption of asthma medications, diuretics and contraceptives can also cause cramps.
How to avoid cramps?
The first and essential step is to maintain a balanced diet so there is no shortage of nutrients. Also, always hydrate before, during, and after exercise, and remember to always stretch before that.
The foods that should be part of your diet are those rich in magnesium, potassium, sodium and calcium, ensuring optimal muscle contraction and reducing the incidence of this problem. In addition, brown rice, brewer’s yeast, oats, peanuts and Brazil nuts are foods that also cure this disease because they are rich in Thiamine.
It is also important to always drink plenty of water daily, as dehydration is one of the causes of cramps. If your diet is balanced and you frequently stretch before playing sports, we advise you to have a blood test, as anemia is also one of the causes.
To get out of a crisis quickly, the most effective attitude is stretching. Stretch the affected area to relax your muscles and stretch your entire body. Rub your muscles so that blood circulation increases and drink two glasses of water at the same time as the crisis.
Some natural medications, however, can work to prevent and treat cramps. Try, for example, if your cramps are recurrent, consume a glass of warm milk before bed and in the morning consume two tablespoons of honey.
Another option is to mix a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, a teaspoon of honey and a crushed calcium capsule in a glass of water. If the pain persists even after the attack, make alternate hot and cold compresses on the area and then apply arnica oil with circular massages.
Teas to relieve cramps
In addition to the medications mentioned above, there are some teas that can help with treatment and prevention. Chamomile tea, for example, acts as a relaxant and makes the muscles more relaxed before bed, preventing them from contracting involuntarily. The consumption of lavender, angelica, lemon, chamomile, turmeric, watercress, burdock or lemongrass tea should be done daily, three or four times a day, until you feel better.
