ALFAVAC TEA – BENEFITS AND PROPERTIES

Scientific name Ocimum gratissimum , basil is a plant with large leaves up to 10 cm in length. Its color is dark green and has origins in the Orient. With an aroma very similar to that of cloves – hence the name by which it is known, basil-cravo –, the plant can reach up to two meters in height.

Benefits and properties

The plant popularly known as alfavacão has antispasmodic, carminative action and acts to combat colds and flu. Because it contains eugenol, a substance with medicinal properties, it also acts as an excellent analgesic and antiseptic. It can also be used to treat sore throats, coughs, fever, bronchitis and body aches.

Eugenol, very present in the plant, is constantly used nowadays in dental offices. Associated with zinc oxide, it is used for dressings. In some regions, the plant is also attributed the calming action in cases of nervousness and paralysis.

Due to its flavor, it has also been used, mainly in the Northeast region of Brazil, by confectioners, for the preparation of sweets, providing a light clove flavor.

How to consume?

The plant can be consumed through tea and tincture, but it can also be found in health food stores as 250mg capsules. The leaves are used for medicinal purposes, but the way of preparation varies according to the treatment.
