The cattail ( Typha domingensis Pers. ) is a plant belonging to the Thyphaceae family , being also known by a series of other names, such as bucha , matgrass , matrass , landim, paina, paina-de- arrow, paineira-do-brejo, partasana, taboinha, taboo, tabuca, among others.

It is an aquatic plant widely used in handicrafts, but also has great value in alternative medicine, thanks to its therapeutic properties.

Properties and benefits

The medicinal properties of cattail include its astringent, diuretic, anti-diarrheal, anti-inflammatory, emollient, tonic, anti-anemic and anti-dysenteric action.

Thanks to its properties, cattail is indicated to treat a number of health conditions, including thrush, dermal inflammation, stomach pain, hematuria, bruises and dislocations, dysmenorrhea, nosebleeds, urinary tract affections, general weakness, among others.

One of the most important properties of cattail is its antiseptic action, which can protect the body from foreign agents, pathogens or microbes.

The gelatinous substance found in young cattail leaves is also known as a potent pain reliever, which can be used to relieve pain and inflammation.

The nutrients and organic compounds found in cattail also act on the skin, being able to heal burns and wounds, in addition to reducing the appearance of scars.
