Known as a shrub of the Rutaceae family, the northern jaborandi is a plant that has some medicinal substances.
The plant originates from South America, occurring in Paraguay and in the North and Northeast of Brazil. In the latter, it can be easily found in the states of Piauí, Maranhão, Paraíba and Amazônia.
The northern jaborandi is a small plant, reaching up to 1.5 meters in height.
A very striking feature of the species comes through its leaves. They are filled with small secretory pouches that, when rubbed, give off an orange-like aroma. In natural medicine, the parts used in treatments are the root and the leaves.

The plant began to be used for medicinal purposes by the Indians who inhabited the American territory, even before the Europeans arrived here. They believed that the northern jaborandi fought mouth ulcers and various types of poison.
Nowadays, with scientific proof, the plant can be used to treat asthma, dry mouth, bronchitis, mumps, eye disorders, diabetes, diphtheria, edema, glaucoma and flu . It also proves to be effective in combating hemorrhages, hepatitis , renal dropsy, urinary insufficiency and uremic intoxications.
As if that wasn’t enough, it fights laryngitis, leukorrhea, nephritis, renal paralysis, pleurisy, pneumonia, rheumatism and hair problems, including: hair loss, seborrhea and dandruff.
Northern jaborandi tea
Among all the forms of treatment that can be extracted from the use of the plant is tea. It is used in cases of flu , acute bronchitis, pleurisy, chronic nephritis, neuralgia, rheumatism and gout. To prepare it, just separate 200 ml of filtered water and 1 teaspoon of chopped leaves.

The first step is to bring the water to a boil. As soon as it reaches the boiling point, turn off the heat and add the chopped herb. Let stand for about 10 minutes, keeping the container capped. After this time, use a sieve to remove the leaves.
The indication is that up to two cups are consumed a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
