Diarrhea has as main characteristics the increase in bowel movements, as well as the loss of stool consistency. According to Dr. Drauzio Varella, “one of the worst complications of diarrhea is dehydration. Adults are more resistant, but babies, children and the elderly are easily dehydrated”.Symptoms of dehydration involve dry mouth, chapped lips, lethargy, mental confusion, and decreased urination. Diarrhea may also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, bloated stomach, urge to evacuate, abdominal pain, among other symptoms.

It is necessary, however, to be aware of the warning signs, because, in this way, you will only be treating the diarrhea and not its cause. There may be other aspects behind it, so you shouldn’t rule out a visit to a doctor. Only a qualified professional can indicate the cause and the best treatment for this symptom.

If there is fever, diarrhea for more than three days, severe abdominal or rectal pain, black or bloody stools, and any signs of dehydration, see a doctor urgently.
