The sapodilla, a very sweet fruit that is generated by the sapodilla maker, is an important raw material when it comes to natural medicine. Originally from Central America and the southern part of Mexico, it is very rich in vitamins, is widely used when it comes to the manufacture of syrups, jams, soft drinks, jellies and cuisine in general. Mainly used in cases of fever, kidney infection and fluid retention, its fruit has as its main properties calcium, iron and vitamins such as B1, B2 and B5 in abundance.

The sapodilla tree is a tree that can reach up to 15m in height, with a leafy crown and bright green leaves. Small pink flowers bloom from this plant. The sapodilla, its fruit, appears all year round, mainly in the summer and its cultivation takes place mainly in the northeast of Brazil. Rich in tannin and latex when green, this fruit is very tasty when ripe (should be consumed only in this state) and a great laxative, due to the fibers present in its composition. Its core has a curious star shape, formed by the dark seeds that are present in its interior, together with a tasty cream, making this fruit one of the most appreciated by Brazilians in general.

The curiosity about the sapodilla tree is that it has a lot of latex, which makes it a potential ingredient for the manufacture of chewing gum.

Ways to use as a home remedy

In cases of fever : Make a tea with the fresh bark of a sapodilla unit in 150ml of water, preferably boiling. Let the mixture rest covered for about five minutes. At the end of this period, drink the tea still warm.

In cases of liquid retention: Mix one teaspoon of sapodilla seed (powder) to 500ml of water, still boiling. Drink the resulting mixture throughout the course of the day.

In case of malnutrition : Try to eat three to six sapodillas a day.
