According to a study published in the scientific publication Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association , regular consumption of coffee and green tea can help reduce stroke risks. The recommended measure for this benefit, however, would be four cups of tea or one cup of coffee a day.

The study

This research was carried out in Japan, at the National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center , and in their study 83,269 Japanese adults, between 45 and 74 years old, were followed for 13 years with monitored coffee and green tea intake, aiming to analyze the results and effects of these two drinks in cardiovascular health. For the study, information such as age, sex, diet, weight and smoking were also analyzed.

Results

According to the results, both drinks help to reduce the risk of suffering a stroke by between 20% and 30% than the others for those who consume tea, and 20% for those who consume coffee.

Consumption of more than one cup of coffee a day, however, can be quite dangerous for the heart. The origins of the effects have not been revealed, but it is believed that the benefits are due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that help protect the body.

Stroke: how to avoid it?

In addition to small actions, such as the consumption of green tea and coffee in the recommended amounts, stroke can also be avoided with the reduction of bad cholesterol – which increases the thickening and hardening of the arteries, causing them to gradually close, get out of sedentary lifestyle and obesity, improve the quality of food, since factors such as obesity, diabetes and hypertension, related to food, influence stroke – control high blood pressure with medication and healthy habits, also reducing the amount of salt. Other measures are to lower excess blood glucose, stop smoking, treat heart disease such as arrhythmia.

Symptoms

Stroke of the ischemic type has an incidence three times greater than that of the hemorrhagic type, and allows the patient to be rescued within four and a half hours to reduce the risk of sequelae or even death.

The symptoms, according to Maurício Hoshino, a neurologist, can be analyzed by the acronym “SAMU”: from a Smile, try to give a Hug, sing a Song. All of this will help to check the deviations of the mouth, if it is difficult to raise the arms, but also to sing a song.
