Exaggerated consumption of tea can cause adverse reactions. Pregnant women, lactating women and those with low blood pressure should avoid it.
It is a diuretic and this favors the elimination of fluid retained by the body, which is responsible for causing abdominal swelling. In addition, the drink made with roselle flower sepals, as it is also known, is rich in vitamin C. Therefore, it helps the immune system.
However, the consumption of this tea must be done with medical supervision, since it can cause adverse reactions in healthy patients, if consumed in an exacerbated way. Or cause problems if ingested by certain people, such as pregnant women, nursing mothers or people with low blood pressure.
Risks and recommendations on the use of hibiscus tea
As with all medicines, whether natural or not, hibiscus requires special attention regarding its use.
This is because, excessive consumption of tea made with this herb can cause some side effects that have been reported by many patients. For example, there is the presence of nausea, feeling weak, dizzy and even fainting.
The disturbances presented after the exaggerated ingestion of hibiscus tea are promoted due to the diuretic action that the drink has.
This characteristic causes the body to eliminate essential substances for the normal functioning of the body, called electrolytes. Such substances are composed of nutrients such as potassium, calcium and sodium. In this way, the patient may suffer from dehydration, resulting in the symptoms already mentioned.
The properties of hibiscus tea can also interfere with levels of female hormone estrogen. For this reason, the drink poses potential risks to women’s fertility. However, it is noteworthy that tea can also be harmful to the male endocrine system, if consumed beyond what is allowed.
Regarding contraindications, these are related to women who are in the gestational period, considering that the chemical composition of the hibiscus can cause mutagenic actions in the baby’s gene structures.
And also in the case of nursing mothers, this is because the enzymes in tea are too strong to be digested by the child’s body.
In addition to these cases, people who have low blood pressure should also avoid using hibiscus tea. Because, according to some scientists, the drink helps in the elimination of electrolytes, which are also responsible for increased pressure.
Thus, those who already have pressure below normal, when using tea, may present the clinical picture of hypotension, putting their lives at risk.
